The End Is Near

By Alexander Samuels

Have you ever wondered when and how Christ will return? It does seem to be a preoccupation of many within the modern Christian church. There are always plenty of books on the bookstore shelves telling us what the book of Revelation really means and when the world will come to an end.

There is also a long list of Christian ministers who have predicted the end and were obviously wrong: . . .

  • Lester Sumrall predicted the Lord would return to set up his kingdom in 2000 (Ron Rhodes, "Millennial Madness," Christian Research Journal, Fall 1990, p. 39).

  • Grant R. Jeffrey suggested the year 2000 as the probable termination date (Grant R. Jeffrey, Armageddon: Appointment with Destiny, Toronto: Frontier Research, 1988, p. 193).

  • On a December 27, 1992, television broadcast, Jerry Falwell stated that he did not believe there would be another millennium or century.

  • In 1988, John F. Walvoord said that the closing years of the 20th century would usher in the return of Christ (John F. Walvoord, The Nations in Prophecy, Grand Rapids, Mich.: Zondervan/Academie, 1988, p. xiv).

  • We don't want to leave out Hal Lindsey, who said that the 1980s could be the last decade in history (Hal Lindsay, The 1980's: Countdown to Armageddon, King of Prussia, Pa.: Westgate Press, 1980, p. 8).

There are also many others who have made false predictions concerning the second coming of Christ and the end of the world, but enough is enough. Aren't we glad false prophets are not stoned anymore?

If you are confused by the peril of impending apocalypse that is so often taught in many churches, Christian books and works of fiction, you will find Last Days Madness: Obsession of the Modern Church by Gary DeMar (American Vision, revised edition, 1999) a lighthouse of understanding. The purpose of this book is to make difficult questions related to prophetical Scriptures easier to comprehend. I recommend Last Days Madness as I would an old friend who has been helpful to me for many years in setting me straight when I was about to wander off into the fog. This book will be a great resource for your Christian library.
